Complete II from INA GRM is a bundle of nineteen notable tools for sound design, even if some of them superficially look quite commonplace.
by Vincenzo Bellanova, Mar. 2019
The bundle of the bundles, the most complete collection of INA GRM Tools, Complete II is a collection of highly reliable and innovative utilities for sound designers, producers and sound engineers.
Grm Tools Installer For Mac Os
The Bundle
The renowned Groupe de Recherches Musicales in France has a long history and are noted for the tools they developed. It is no secret that some of their bundles are the heart of a lot of sound designers’ weaponry. Complete II reassembles four smaller collections and it offers all of the nineteen plug-ins in a single solution. The different bundles are GRM Tools Classic (Doppler, Shuffling, Reson, CombFilter, Delays, BandPass and PitchAccum), GRM Tools Evolution (Evolution, Grinder, Fusion), GRM Tools Space (Spaces 3D, SpaceGrain, Spaces and SpaceFilter) and GRM Tools Spectral Transform (Warp, Contrast, Shift, Equalize). A minor downside is that single plugins are not available for purchase, but the single bundles are not going to represent a serious threat to your wallet.
Despite some of the tool names being pretty self-explanatory (we are probably familiar with band pass filters or graphic equalizers), their ability to morph between several presets can open the doors to a tremendous number of possibilities, something we could otherwise obtain only with a lot of automation. So, even the most familiar process can take a new shape with these tools. But there’s much more, because most of the plugins included here are capable of operations we might never think of, such as frequency warping, rearranging the spectral components of a signal, dividing the input sources into grains ready to be organized in space, or, why not, doing the same with single frequency bands. And what’s more, we can morph our sound with CombFilters and/or Reson, create thundering whooshes with the Doppler, let our material evolve with Evolution, or create ethereal atmospheres with Freeze.
INA also welcomed a new member to the family, SpacesVR, not included in the Complete II bundle. But if you’re interested in VR and binaural sound, you won’t miss the possibility to open a new dimension for your soundscapes, spatializing your material in a realistic way by taking advantage of HRTFs (Head Related Transfer Functions, simplified functions that take into consideration how ears perceive and localize the sound in space).
As you might have noticed, the options here are too numerous to be described in a single article, so we will try to analyze only some or the tools and propose ideas for sound design.
Interface
All the INA GRM Tools share a very similar interface, which is clear and orderly, usually not filled with an excess of parameters. In most cases sliders and values are displayed around a main central display which hosts different features or meters depending on the plugin. The display frequently contains an X/Y pad mapped with the main controls for an easier and faster morphing of the preset.
What is unique and notable about these plugins is the possibility to save up to sixteen presets (cmd+click on one of the available slots at the right of the interface) and seamlessly morph between them using the SuperSlider located at the bottom of the interface. While interpolating between the different values, the plugin will generate a sort of intermediate patch, gently sliding from one preset to another, and this can provide movement or morph the sound even more dynamically. This is not the only way we can interpolate different values. At the right of the sixteen slots there’s a time slider, which determines how much time it takes to pass from one setting to another if we click on a new preset.
Another intelligent feature is Agitation, a kind of random LFO with controls over Rate and Amount and that we can assign to most of the parameters by clicking on the colored button on the right of the numeric value field. There’s more: there are actually four different Agitation groups which can be set to different batch of parameters, for an even more complex motion of the patch.
Almost all of the sliders and knobs can be controlled by MIDI messages, and in the majority of the tools we can find a Mix slider, simple but very handy feature that allows blending the original source with the processed signal for a high degree of control. All the interfaces are completely resizable by dragging on the lower right corner.
Overall, the similarity between the GUIs and the simple controls make the plug-ins easy to use and we can get addicted in a few minutes.
Grm Tools Vst
Tools
As mentioned earlier, some of the tools are dedicated to more basic operations, like Contrast or Equalize and BandPass, probably due to the fact that these utilities were released almost a decade ago. Equalize is a 31-band graphic EQ, nothing more, the interesting point is that we can set different configurations and morph between them with the SuperSlider.
Contrast is a more interesting tool for reshaping the amplitude of frequency bands and allows a creative solution for sound mangling. The manual says that it can be used for mastering, I think it would be hard to manage with precision the overall mix, but I can see it being a great tool for expansion, which can result in something similar to the popular OTT, albeit conceptually different (OTT is Over The Top, a famous plugin by Xfer and a preset of the Multiband Compressor of Live, largely used by electronic music producers to exaggerate dynamics). What Contrast basically does, is to analyze the input signals and groups the frequency bands by their amplitude in Weak, Medium and Strong. The number of bands can be determined as well as the boundaries between amplitudes in the main display. Dragging up or down the horizontal lines we can freely divide redefine the areas of amplitude considered strong, medium and weak. We could also define a frequency range by dragging two vertical lines, although these are almost hidden and rather difficult to select. Three sliders at the right of the main display let us adjust the amplitude of the different groups, rebalancing the sound. In the following example, we applied Contrast to a SuperSaw loop, enhancing the brightness without squashing the sound.
SawsSaws Contrast[Audio Files GRM_01_Saws and GRM_02_SawsContrast go here]
Frequency Warp, from the Spectral Transform Bundle, is a personal favorite. I tried to experiment with it before diving into the manual, and I was captured by how it can completely change a sound. It was hard to find a source where Warp’s presence resulted uninteresting or completely out of place. I tried to place it on booms, braams (essentially brass and horns), benders, and atmospheres, and I must confess that I’m wondering why I haven’t tried it before. The concept behind this tool is fairly simple, but very smart: it allows us to rearrange the frequency components of a signal. We can find the Input frequencies on the horizontal axis and the Output ones on the vertical axis. By default, there is a straight diagonal line representing the unaffected sound. We can freely click to insert points, drag them, create smooth curves to remap the spectral shape of the starting material. We will divide the signal in frequency bands (up to 4096) and remap the according to the shape of the line.
MarkerMarker Warp[Audio Files GRM_03_Marker and GRM_04_MarkerWarp go here]
Shift is a simple utility for frequency shifting or scaling: in the first case it will add a constant frequency to all the spectral components, and in the second case it will multiply. There are number boxes for tweaking with precision, but we can definitely have more fun with the 2D display. Shift is particularly useful when automated for Risers FX or when applied to Drum Loops or rhythmic material.
CombFilter and Reson are more common effects (at least today, remember that some of these tools appeared a while ago?) but highly intuitive and useful in order to turn unptiched material into pitched: you can try with hums, room tones and atonal drones and morph them into atmospheres or pads with a touch of reverb. CombFilter lets us define the frequencies of the peaks created by the Comb, and also adjust the Resonance, which will result in a longer decay and in a more metallic and pronounced effect. It is a pity that we cannot define the frequencies by notes, but CombFilter remains a great tool for weird, resonant sounds. In this video by Native Instruments, Loïc Couthier, sound designer at Playstation Europe, demonstrate how he used a comb filter in Massive when designing a layer for an engine sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNZ1NH9TAWc
Reson can lead to similar results, but the concept behind it is different, and similar to some kind of Physical Modelling applications (like Tri-Axis Modal Synthesis by Giorgio Sancristoforo). It offers up to 64 filters (2nd-order band pass) whose frequencies and distribution can be changed to reshape the original material. With Reson is really easy to transform sounds into bells or resonating metallic objects. We can control the distribution of the filter frequencies and, for a more experimental result, add a Random factor to animate the patch.
Shuffling is another bizarre tool that can be reminiscent of a weird, automated sampler. In fact it samples an incoming signal (for a maximum buffer window of 3s) and shuffles the different blocks of sounds. The concept is similar to granular synthesis, but with much longer grains. We can determine the fragment size, initial and final pitch of the segments, the envelope of them, the density, or the number of fragments that will be heard, and much more. I tried it on a tonal texture: long fragments with smooth envelopes and a lowered pitch resulted in a deeper and chiller atmosphere.
AtmosAtmos Shuffling[Audio Files GRM_05_Atmos and GRM_06_AtmosShuffling go here]
We can’t close our review of the plugins without mentioning SpaceGrain. This tool will definitely blow away sound designers. The Input signal is sampled and divided into up to 100 grains that we can move in a multichannel space. Depending on how many channels we set, we will see multiple speaker icons, and basing on the grain numbers, the cloud of orange dots will be denser and bigger. We can take control over the duration and pitch of the grains, mix the processed sound with the original signal, or click and drag directly into the display to move the center of the grain cloud. SpaceGrain can obviously give more sophisticated results with a multichannel setting, but it is a great option to add motion and texture to our material, or to completely destroy it with random settings and crazy pitch shifting of the single grains.
Conclusions
If anyone asked me if something like a fundamental set of tools for sound design exists, I would definitely recommend INA GRM bundles. Not only are there true gems inside of them, gems meaning unique and inspiring plug-ins, but these plug-ins are so easy to use. A quick read of the manual, which is simple, clear and very well organized, will enhance the users’ experience. What I particularly appreciated is a quick start tutorial for each of the tools. Some of the tools in the Complete bundle come from some years past, but the wonderful possibility of interpolating different presets will definitely add interest to our sound design. The price is reasonable for what you get (nineteen plugins), upgrading options are available as well as special educational discounts (50% for students and 40% for teachers). INA GRM Complete II is a must for sound designers and for experimental producers (although maybe a bit less for those engaged in more traditional operations).
INA GRM Complete II is available for both Mac and PC platforms, in Standalone, VST, AU and AAX versions, both 32 and 64-bit. The bundle is available at the price of €600.00 EUR, with different pricing options for upgrades. An iLok account is required for the activation.
